International Conference: “The Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine: ten years later”

This Conference is organised by the Steering Committee on Bioethics (CDBI) of the Council of Europe, in cooperation with the Slovenian authorities in the framework of the Slovenian Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

The aim of the Conference would be to discuss the Oviedo Convention’s impact and relevance and the enduring nature of the principles it had established. In particular, the Conference will address the following topics:

  • the Convention’s impact in both legislative and practical terms;

  • analysis of the reasons some States have not yet ratified the Convention;

  • if applicable, the extent to which some principles might now be challenged in practice.


  • The Conference will be opened by the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe and the Minister of Health of the Republic of Slovenia. The working languages will be English and French. The Conference will be open to the press. Please see attached the draft programme.
