Indifesa – A Triennal campaign to protect girls' rights

05.10.2012 - Girls around the world are still silent victims of violence, abuse and trafficking. Terres des Hommes Italia will launch a triennal campaign “Indifesa” to guarantee that girls receive education, health care and protection from violence and abuse.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the general public and of the Italian institutions on the issue of gender discrimination, and to financially support projects that aim to tackle forms of discrimination in different countries such as Peru, Bangladesh, Ivory Coast, India and Italy.

In the context of the Council of Europe ONE in FIVE Campaign in Italy, the Italian Department of Equal Opportunities will host a conference for the presentation of the campaign “Indifesa” that will take place in Rome on 10 October 2012. Speakers include: Ms Elsa Fornero, Italian Minister of Labour, Social Policies and Equal Opportunities; Ms Patrizia De Rose, Head of the Equal Opportunities Department, Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers; Ms Simonetta Matone, Deputy Chief of the Department of the Penitentiary Administration – Ministry of Justice, and Ms Virginia Murillo, UN Voluntary Trust Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery.

At the conference, issues concerning the difficult situation of girls who are victims of violence and discrimination will be discussed. This conference will also be an opportunity to celebrate the UN International Day of Girl Child.
