Building a Europe for and with children

Council of Europe supports “Children’s Rights Behind Bars” project

03.07.14 The Council of Europe is co-financing the European project “Children’s Rights Behind Bars”, coordinated by Defence for Children International (DCI) - Belgium. It aims at improving the implementation of international juvenile justice standards to protect fundamental rights of children deprived of their liberty. The project will culminate in a practical Guide to be used by professionals when visiting places of deprivation of liberty, particularly juvenile detention facilities. The project started up in March 2014 and will last until February 2016. At a first stage, the team worked mainly on the methodology for the national researches. In April 2014 a kick-off seminar took place in Brussels. International experts and partners worked together to settle the basis of the project and integrate their expertise in the research methodology. Currently a national research on monitoring mechanisms and complaint procedures available to children deprived of their liberty is being implemented in fourteen European countries.
