11.05.2011 Protecting
children’s rights is set as a priority feature of the Ukrainian Chairmanship
of the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers. During the May session of
the Committee of Ministers, children’s rights top
the list of the items to be addressed, among other issues such as human
rights and the rule of law in the context of democracy and stability in
Europe, and strengthening and developing local democracy.
Four key areas for harnessing children’s rights have been identified for
action during the Chairmanship: combating all forms of violence against
children, promoting child-friendly health care and child-friendly justice,
and protecting children in the social sector.
Ukraine will support three major events during the Chairmanship:
- an international conference “Combating violence against children: from
isolated actions to integrated strategies” on 24-25 May 2011 in Kiev, co-organised
by the State Service for Youth and Sport of Ukraine, UNICEF Regional Office
for CEE/CIS, and the
Council of Europe Programme “Building a Europe for and with Children“;
- a European Conference on standards of protection for unaccompanied asylum-seeking
minors on 15-16 September 2011 in Odessa, and
- an event on child health care to be held on 11-13 October 2011 in Kiev.
Ukraine will chair the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for
the first time ever from 11 May until 7 November 2011, before handing over
the chairmanship to the United Kingdom. This is a great opportunity for
Ukraine to present its vision for the protection and promotion of children’s
rights in Europe.
