Building a Europe for and with children

Event: "Strengthening the protection of children’s rights through the European Social Charter (revised)"

18.02.2011 - This event was organised by: the Council of Europe, within the framework of the Joint Project with the European Union on strengthening and protecting women’s and children’s rights in Ukraine (TRES) on 15-16 February 2011.

The purpose of this event was to promote measures aiming at respecting and protecting children’s rights in line with the European Social Charter (revised), to conduct a comparative analysis of the legal guarantees of children’s rights and to contribute to the development of a national policy, aimed at overcoming obstacles to observing and broadening children’s rights.

It gave participants the opportunity to share best practices on the promotion of children’s rights, including the protection of children from violence, abuse and exploitation. It will also give them the means for a more effective implementation of the European Social Charter (revised) as regards children’s rights, as well as increase the awareness of the provisions of the Charter and its case law in this field.

Aksana Filipіshyna, Deputy Director of the State Department for Adoption and Protection of the Rights of Children (Ministry of Ukraine for Family, Youth and Sport) addressed the audience. Régis Brillat, Executive Secretary of the Council of Europe’s European Committee of Social Rights took part in the debates.

Participants included representatives from the Ministry for Family, Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education and Sciences, Youth and Sports, the General Prosecutor’s Office, the Supreme Court, the Commissioner for Human Rights as well as NGOs.
