ECtHR and FRA joint project

Handbook on European law in the field of asylum, immigration and border control to be launched in Strasbourg
Strasbourg, 11 June 2013

The handbook on European law relating to asylum, borders and immigration will be launched on 11 June 2013 at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The handbook, a product of co-operation between the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and the Fundamental Rights Agency of the European Union (FRA), provides an inventory of the most significant cases by the ECtHR and the CJEU, in particular those related to the application of existing European Union law. It aims to clarify applicable Council of Europe and European Union standards and case-law with regard to deportation/removal, conditions and legality of detention, access to courts and legal aid, situation of separated children and victims of trafficking etc.

ECtHR and FRA to launch a handbook on asylum, borders and immigration law in Europe
Strasbourg, 18 May 2013

The European Court of Human Rights and the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) are to launch a joint handbook on European law relating to asylum, immigration and border control. The book will be launched on 11 June 2013 at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

The purpose of the guide is to raise awareness and knowledge amongst judges and legal practitioners of fundamental rights guarantees in the area of asylum, immigration and border control. Issues in these particular areas are increasingly coming under consideration in cases both before ECtHR and CJEU, and the relevant European law is not always readily understood. In this perspective, the handbook will highlight and summarise the key legal and jurisprudential principles on European law in these fields.

A seminar on European law on asylum, borders and immigration will be organised for the launching of the handbook at the European Court for Human Rights in Strasbourg on 11 June.
