Parliamentary Assembly Session : 1 to 5 October 2007
Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow: the Council of Europe, a forum for intercultural dialogue
[02/10/2007] ''Religious ignorance and immorality provide fertile ground for the extremism and terrorism which, under the guise of religion, are threatening Europe and the world today,'' declared Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and all Russia in a speech to the Parliamentary Assembly on 2 October.
He said he believed firmly in free choice for future generations to study their religious traditions and in the need to be familiar with other traditions so as to create an environment where people could live together in peace. The Patriarch also spoke of the importance of the Council of Europe’s role in promoting intercultural dialogue between religious leaders and society at large.
