Cloud computing: efficient implementation of data and cybercrime conventions is needed

Cloud computing, which implies delivering hosted services over the Internet, will magnify existing problems, such as the protection of privacy. Therefore more efficient implementation of existing agreements such as the Council of Europe conventions on cybercrime and data protection should be ensured.

These were some of the messages delivered at a workshop on Privacy & Security Implications of Cloud Computing co-organised by the Council of Europe, EPIC and the French Government at the Internet Governance Forum on 17 November.

As many countries as possible from around the world need to join these conventions to establish globally trusted privacy systems and ensure security. Moreover, cloud computing raises questions on transborder law enforcement access to data that will need to be addressed.

"The Council of Europe should play an active role in the shaping of responses", said Alexander Seger, Head of the Council of Europe Information Society against Cybercrime Division.
