Council of Europe offers assistance to states in fighting cybercrime

Developing global harmonised legislation based on international standards, in particular the Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime, was the focus of the discussion at a workshop organised on 17 November at the Internet Governance Forum.

Specific examples from India, Sri Lanka and Romania regarding its implementation illustrated the value of this treaty. The workshop also highlighted the substantial assistance provided by the Council of Europe within the Project on cybercrime to different countries to harmonise their criminal law provisions on cybercrime with those of other countries in order to facilitate international cooperation.

More than 100 countries worldwide have strengthened or are in the process of strengthening their cybercrime legislation using the convention standards as a model.

The participants' questions underlined the complexity of the legislation on cybercrime and the need for assistance and international joint efforts.
