Council of Europe North-South Prize

The North-South Prize has been awarded every year since 1995 to two candidates : a candidate from the North and one from the South (preferably to a man and a woman).

Candidates should be recognised within the following fields of action: human rights protection, defence of pluralist democracy, promotion of public awareness about issues concerning global solidarity and interdependence, and reinforcement of the North-South partnership.

 

16 March 2009, Lisbon - 14th North-South Prize Award Ceremony
Rania Al-Abdullah, Queen of Jordan, and Jorge Sampaio, former President of Portugal, High Representative of the United Nations for the Alliance of Civilisations, are the winners of the 2008 North-South Prize. The official award ceremony took place in Lisbon at the Senate Room of the Portuguese Parliament. (more ...)

13 March 2009: Italy re-joins the North-South Centre 
Italy joined the North-South Centre on 13 March and became its 20th member state. ''This decision is of major political importance, as Italy was one of the ten founding States of the Centre in November 1989 and has been a big contributor until its withdrawal in July 2006,'' said Claude Frey, Chairman of the Executive Council of the North-South Centre.  (more...)
