Forum for the future of democracy 
Yerevan, Armenia - 19 to 21 October 2010
A Congress delegation is participating in the Forum for the Future of Democracy, from 19 to 21 October, in Yerevan (Armenia). Organised by the Council of Europe in co-operation with the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Forum for the future of democracy with the theme ''Democracy in Europe – Principles and challenges'' is expected to identify strategic approaches to strengthening good democratic governance in the European space in the face of regional and global challenges, and to formulate proposals for the next phase of the Forum process. ''The threats and opportunities to democracy are constantly on the agenda of the Council of Europe Congress'' said Ian Micallef, President a.i. of the Congress, at the opening of the Forum for the future of democracy, on 19 October 2010. ''For us, democracy is essentially a bottom-up process, and the Congress has a unique mandate to evaluate its situation in Europe through the monitoring of the implementation of the European Charter of Local Self-Government,'' he added. "For the Congress, the way out of the crisis is further decentralization of power. It makes economic sense: local and regional authorities know the needs of their communities and businesses best", stressed Günther Krug, Vice-President of the Congress, on 20 October 2010, addressing the workshop on democracy and representation, organised during the Forum for the future of democracy, in Erevan (Armenia). He underlined that "Proximity governance" provides better opportunities for political participation of citizens and serves their interests in the most tangible way. Stand of the Congress at the Democracy Fair, during the Forum for the future of democracy
The Congress took part in the "Democracy Fair" organised as a side-event during the Forum. Institutional organisations and civil society presented stands on their activities. This Fair was an opportunity to exchange information and concrete experiences on initiatives for democracy.
