10 Moroccan municipalities commit to ELDW 2012 (Rabat, July 10, 2012)
On the occasion of a mission in Morocco July 11 regarding the regionalization project undertaken by the Moroccan government, the Congress organised a meeting to present to local elected officials the European Local Democracy Week. The meeting, prepared in cooperation with the new Morocco office of the Council of Europe and with the support of the General Directorate of Local Authorities belonging to the Ministry of Interior, was held at the Yacht Club of Sale (in Rabat urban area) July 10 and chaired by Fathallah Oualalou, Mayor of Rabat.
The mayors attended with interest a presentation of the European Local Democracy Week and its guiding theme for 2012 edition: "The human rights make for more inclusive community”. For its strengthening of public participation in decision-taking, ELDW is relevant for implementing the participatory principles of the Charter for Communities in force in Morocco- the mayors stated.
Among those who addressed the meeting was Allal Sekrouhi, Director of the General Directorate of the Local Authorities at Morocco's Ministry of the Interior, who welcomed this form of co-operation between the Congress and Moroccan authorities and wished full success. The meeting concluded with 10 local authorities (see list below) committing themselves to participate in ELDW to take initiatives with their citizens in October 2012. List of Moroccan communities that signed their commitment to participate in ELDW 2012: Rabat, Fez, Agadir, Arbaoua, Chefchaouen, Kenitra, Laayoune, Oujda, Sale, Tetouan.
The ELDW theme for 2014 will be adopted during the 26th Congress Session (25-27 March 2014). Registration to the ELDW will be available after this date.
