Council of Europe Congress observes the elections for the Agavani (Assembly) of the City of Yerevan, Armenia,
Local and regional authorities’ responses to the economic crisis central to the debates at the 25th Session of the Congress [28/10/2013]
Members of the Congress are to meet in Strasbourg, France, from 29 to 31 October 2013, on the occasion of the 25th Session, at which several debates will focus on local and regional responses to the economic crisis and challenges in the sphere of social cohesion. There will be debates on, in particular, “Integration through self-employment: promoting local entrepreneurship of migrants”, “Migrants’ access to regional labour markets” and “Regionalisation and devolution in Europe in a context of economic crisis”. The session will also be the occasion of a special ceremony for the European Charter of Local Self-Government, now that it covers all 47 member states of the Council of Europe. This benchmark international treaty is the pillar for the monitoring activities of the Congress relating to local democracy in Europe. And there are several monitoring reports on the agenda for the session, concerning Ireland, Hungary, Ukraine, Albania and Denmark, as well as a report on the election of the members of the Avagani (Assembly) of the city of Yerevan and another on the local elections in “the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia”. 
Meeting of the Congress Bureau [17/09/2013]
The members of the Bureau of the Congress met in Strasbourg on 17 September 2013. Johan van den HOUT, Netherlands (R, SOC) was appointed Congress spokesperson on Children and Jos WIENEN, The Netherlands (L, EPP/CCE)spokesperson on the observation of local and regional elections. Among the other topics on the agenda were the 25th Session, the 2013 budget, as well as the latest developments relating to cooperation activities and activities in the sphere of Roma. The participants also discusses the reports on the observation of local elections in 'the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia' (24 March 2013) and the Yerevan Assembly elections in Armenia (5 May 2013) as well as joint statements on the current political situations in Turkey and in Georgia and the health consequences of asbestos. They also prepared Congress contribution to the World Forum for Democracy (Strasbourg, 27-29 November).  
Congress Bureau meeting in Yerevan [13/06/2013]
To mark Armenia’s Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, the Bureau of the Congress held its meeting in Yerevan, Armenia, on 18 June. Bureau members exchanged views with high-level Armenian officials and discussed the agenda of the 25th Session of the Congress, activities of the Congress committees, as well as the latest developments in local and regional democracy. Among the other items on the agenda were co-operation activities, the Alliance of Cities and Regions for Roma Inclusion, the observation of elections of the Assembly (Avagani) of Yerevan in Armenia (5 May 2013) and the contribution of the Congress to the priorities of the chairmanships of the Committee of Ministers. In this context, Herwig van Staa, President of the Congress, met with high level representatives of the government and the Parliament including Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan and the President of the Armenian National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan. Herwig van Staa, held a press conference at 11am the same day at the National Library of the Republic of Armenia.
