First meeting on the role of human rights structures in the execution of judgments

[02/02/08 18:30] On 31 January and 1 February 2008 the Commissioner’s Office organised in Strasbourg a pilot meeting with a number of National Human Rights Structures (NHRSs) on the possibilities to enhance their role in the execution of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights.

The meeting was the first one dedicated to this topic and was aimed at exchanging information with the NHRSs on their potential involvement in aiding best their own States to ensure that the binding judgments of the Court are effectively executed. Participants shared a number of good practices in the execution process and discussed possible approaches to facilitate the non-repetition of violations at national level.

The meeting stemmed from the conclusions of the 2007 Athens Round Table and was organised as part of the enhanced cooperation between the Commissioner and the NHRSs. It was attended by 5 pilot NHRS from Austria, Belgium, France and the United Kingdom, and 6 observer structures from Cyprus, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Spain.
