First meeting of Focal Points of National Human
Rights Structures
Strasbourg, 26-27 May 2007
What
can be done to improve the protection of human rights at domestic level?
What role could National Human Rights Structures (NHRSs) play in this context?
To find concrete answers, Commissioner Hammarberg held a meeting with representatives of NHRSs specifically
nominated for the purpose of the co-operation with the Commissioner’s Office.
The event took place on 6 and 7 November 2007 in Strasbourg.
Participants discussed practical examples concerning the role NHRSs may
have in helping execute the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights.
Besides, they designed a programme of activities that the network will carry
out over the next years to foster the effective implementation of European
human rights standards.
This meeting was the first step to implement a systematic co-operation
between the Commissioner and NHRSs agreed upon at the
Athens Round Table in April 2007.
