Colloquy "Protecting and Supporting Human Rights
Defenders in Europe"
Strasbourg, 13-14 November 2006
On 13-14 November, the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights held
a conference, jointly with the Directorate General of Human Rights, on the
situation of human rights defenders in Europe.
The colloquy examined the
challenges and difficulties faced by human rights defenders in the 46 Council
of Europe member states, and sought to identify measures which could be
implemented to support and protect them.
Participants included representatives of governments, human rights NGOs
and National Human Rights Institutions. The Council of Europe Parliamentary
Assembly, the European Court of Human Rights, the United Nations, the European
Union and OSCE/ODIHR were also represented.
