Secretary General meets French prime minister [02/07/2003]
Council of Europe Secretary General Walter Schwimmer met the French prime minister, Jean-Pierre Raffarin, yesterday. During their discussions Mr Schwimmer spoke about the Council of Europe's role as a pan-European organisation and said that under the future Constitution of the European Union the EU would have legal personality and consideration could then be given to granting it 'associate member' status with the Council of Europe. Mr Raffarin referred to the Council of Europe's importance in the context of the newly enlarged EU and said that it would always be at the forefront of European integration. Today's Europe was born here, he added.
Le Secrétaire Général rencontre le Premier ministre français [02/07/2003]
Le Secrétaire Général du Conseil de l’Europe, Walter Schwimmer, a rencontré le 1er juillet, le Premier ministre français, Jean-Pierre Raffarin. Lors de la discussion, M. Schwimmer a évoqué la place du Conseil de l’Europe tant qu’ organisation pan-européenne. Se référant à la future Constitution de l’Union Européenne, il a souligné que la nouvelle personnalité juridique de l’UE permettrait d’envisager un statut de ''membre associé'' du Conseil de l’Europe pour l’UE. M. Raffarin a pour sa part déclaré qu’il mesurait toute l'importance du Conseil de l’Europe dans la nouvelle géographie de l'UE et souligné que le Conseil de l’Europe avait toujours été à l'avant-garde de la construction européenne. ''L'actuelle Europe est née ici'' a-t-il affirmé.
