At the opening of a lecture held at the Council of Europe in the framework of the European Year of People with Disabilities, the Secretary General pointed out that the Organisation was actively involved in promoting the implementation of policies for the integration of people with disabilities in member states. The lecturer, Marc Merger, a Professor at the University of Metz, emphasised that anyone with a disability both could and should live the same life as everyone else. ''Eliminating discrimination against people with disabilities means fostering social cohesion'', he said, pointing out that much remained to be done in this respect, in particular as far as professional integration is concerned

A l’ouverture d’une conférence organisée au Conseil de l’Europe dans le cadre de l’Année européenne des handicapés, le Secrétaire Général a rappelé que l’Organisation travaille activement à promouvoir la mise en œuvre de politiques d’intégration des handicapés dans ses Etats membres. Le conférencier Marc Merger, Professeur à l’Université de Metz, a souligné que les handicapés peuvent et doivent avoir la même vie que tout le monde. ''Supprimer la discrimination à l’égard des handicapés, c’est favoriser la cohésion sociale'' a t-il dit rappelant que beaucoup restait à faire à cet égard, notamment en matière d’insertion professionnelle.
