Walter Schwimmer welcomes the creation of the International Criminal Bar [19/06/2002]

The Council of Europe's Secretary General has welcomed the decision to establish an International Criminal Bar, taken on 15 June at an international conference in Montreal attended by more than 350 representatives of 68 bar associations from 48 countries. With the International Criminal Court due to come into operation in a few days time, he welcomed this new body, which drew on the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers recommendation on the freedom of exercise of the profession of lawyer. The Secretary General referred to the 'fundamental role that lawyers and professional associations of lawyers play in ensuring the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms'.  (More...)

Le SecrĂ©taire GĂ©nĂ©ral du Conseil de l’Europe a saluĂ© la crĂ©ation, le 15 juin, Ă  MontrĂ©al, du Barreau PĂ©nal International, dĂ©cidĂ©e lors d’une confĂ©rence rĂ©unissant plus de 350 reprĂ©sentants de 68 barreaux, venus de 48 pays. A quelques jours de l’entrĂ©e en vigueur de la Cour PĂ©nale Internationale, il s’est fĂ©licitĂ© de l’instauration d’une structure s’appuyant sur la Recommandation du ComitĂ© des Ministres du Conseil de l’Europe sur la libertĂ© d’exercice de la profession d’avocat.
