Walter Schwimmer welcomes the creation of the International Criminal Bar [19/06/2002]
The Council of Europe's Secretary General has welcomed the decision to establish an International Criminal Bar, taken on 15 June at an international conference in Montreal attended by more than 350 representatives of 68 bar associations from 48 countries. With the International Criminal Court due to come into operation in a few days time, he welcomed this new body, which drew on the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers recommendation on the freedom of exercise of the profession of lawyer. The Secretary General referred to the 'fundamental role that lawyers and professional associations of lawyers play in ensuring the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms'.

Walter Schwimmer salue la création du Barreau Pénal International [19/06/2002]
Le Secrétaire Général du Conseil de l’Europe a salué la création, le 15 juin, à Montréal, du Barreau Pénal International, décidée lors d’une conférence réunissant plus de 350 représentants de 68 barreaux, venus de 48 pays. A quelques jours de l’entrée en vigueur de la Cour Pénale Internationale, il s’est félicité de l’instauration d’une structure s’appuyant sur la Recommandation du Comité des Ministres du Conseil de l’Europe sur la liberté d’exercice de la profession d’avocat. Le Secrétaire Général a rappelé ''le rôle fondamental que les avocats et leurs associations professionnelles jouent dans la protection des droits de l’homme et des libertés fondamentales''.
