On 6 June 2017 the Council of Europe awarded its Quality Label to the KDYS Killarney Youth Centre in Ireland.
This is the tenth youth centre to receive this recognition of its achievements in promoting Council of Europe standards and values in youth policy and youth work.
The award ceremony took place at the premises of KDYS Killarney Youth Centre (Fair Hill, Killarney, Co. Kerry, Ireland), in the presence of Fergal Lynch, Secretary General at the Department of Children and Youth Affairs of the Republic of Ireland and Antje Rothemund, Head of Youth Department of the Council of Europe.
The Council of Europe Quality Label for Youth Centres provides an opportunity for youth centres in member states to associate themselves with the quality concept and standards applied at the Council of Europe’s Youth Centres in Strasbourg and Budapest.
Residential and educational youth centres that apply for the Quality Label are assessed on their work in the specific areas of value education, multiplication of social impact, influence on youth policy, knowledge development, educational innovation and international co-operation.
To qualify for the Label, youth centres should serve the youth sector and young people; promote international co-operation within the youth sector; have a clear mandate from public authorities; have in-house educational staff working to support the activities, and to have accommodation facilities within one campus with the working facilities.
The Council of Europe awards this Label to recognize youth centres that have a diversified set of activities and programmes for a very diverse youth population. This is how the KDYS Killarney Youth Centre stands out. It demonstrates:
- A strong sense of community and outreach to more than just young people
- The ability to work with vulnerable people alongside mainstream youth
- The development and use of innovative methods and approaches which have in turn become models of good practice.
