A conference to mark the launching of the EU-CoE Joint Project ““Enhancing the Effectiveness of the Albanian System of Human Rights protection and discrimination” took place in Tirana, Albania on 5 April 2016.
The Conference discussed the current developments and perspectives and aimed at providing a detailed analyses and recommendations on anti-discrimination and human rights in Albania, based on a recent needs assessment. The second part of the event was dedicated to panel discussions addressing different topics of legislation and policies, institutional set-up and awareness raising, in line with project’s main objectives.
Mr Giakoumopoulos, Director of Human Rights Directorate, Council of Europe; Ms Romana Vlahutin, Head of the EU Delegation to Albania; the Albanian People’s Advocate; the Deputy Minister of Welfare and Youth; the Commissioner for Protection against Discrimination welcomed the participants and shared the priorities of their respective institutions for advancing human rights protection and anti-discrimination practices.
Representatives of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Youth, of People’s Advocate, the Commissioner of Protection from Discrimination, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Justice, the Judiciary, local government units, NGOs operating in the field, Diplomatic Corps and International Organisations operating in Albania attended the Conference.
The Project 1st Steering Committee Meeting took place the following day. It presented discussed and approved the project’s work plan and the Terms of Reference for the Project’s Steering Committee. It also defined the mandate and composition of the inter-institutional working group to act as an advisory body to the Project’s Steering Committee and provide technical support to project implementation.
The project aims at supporting human rights and equality bodies in their work to ensure protection from discrimination and a sustained, comprehensive and inclusive implementation of human rights.
