Training of trainers on suicide prevention activities in prisons

On 12-14 December 2014, the Council of Europe (CoE) conducted a training of trainers on suicide prevention activities in prisons for selected social workers, regime officers, psychologists and psychiatrists. The training is part of the suicide prevention work organised in the framework of the European Union/CoE Joint Programme “Human Rights in prisons and Other Closed institutions”.

Curriculum and methodology of the training programme were specially tailored by CoE international and Georgian experts. The training focused on stress and other factors in prison affecting the emotional state of prisoners and increasing the risks of suicide and self-harm. The programme also involved case studies and exercises, which helped participants to learn more about suicide prevention activities and suicide management techniques as well as about the importance of team effort in this work. After completion of the training, participants will become trainers for their colleagues and share with them the knowledge acquired through the programme.

The European Union/CoE Joint Programme “Human Rights in prisons and Other Closed institutions” was launched in July 2013 and it aims to strengthen human rights and improve access to healthcare for persons deprived of their liberty
