Meeting with the Minister of Corrections

On 27 August 2015, Mr Cristian Urse, the new Head of the Council of Europe (CoE) Office in Georgia and Mr Alessandro Savaris, Deputy Head of the CoE met Mr Kakha Kakhishvili, newly appointed Minister of Corrections. During this introductory meeting, they discussed existing cooperation between the CoE and the Ministry as well as the plans for the future.

The CoE Office in Georgia has actively been supporting the Ministry in introducing European Standards to the penitentiary system. Since 2013, the training sessions organized in the framework of the EU/CoE joint project has covered more than 1000 penitentiary medical and non-medical staff members. In addition, 24 newly recruited prison regime staff already graduated from and 25 more are currently attending the long-term training programme, unprecedented for the system.

By involving the CoE experts, the projects has also supported developing a number of  legal acts, instructions and standards, essential for the functioning of the penitentiary system. The most recent document – “Penitentiary Healthcare Service Standards”, together with its roadmap, was printed in August in 7 languages and handed to the Ministry for distribution among prisoners. The project also envisages purchase of medical equipment for the Penitentiary Central hospital.
