Calais follow-up, European Forum on child rights and CEB´s 60th anniversary

Following his report on the situation of migrants and refugees in Calais and Grande-Synthe, on 7 and 8  November 2016 the Secretary General’s Special Representative on migration and refugees visited centres in the Grand-Est region where migrants and refugees were transferred from the Calais camp after its closure. Ambassador Boček talked to unaccompanied minors, adult asylum-seekers and the competent authorities about the evacuation exercise in Calais and the next steps. The report and the follow-up visits were discussed in the Committee of Ministers on 9 November.

On 29 November Mr Boček participated in the The European Forum on the rights of the child in Brussels and spoke at the plenary session on “Challenges and opportunities for the protection of children in migration”. The event is an annual conference organised by the European Commission. It gathers key actors from EU Member States, ombudspersons for children, international organisations, NGOs, practitioners, academics and EU institutions to discuss and promote good practice on the rights of the child.

The Office of the Special Representative assisted in the organisation of a webinar on migration law to celebrate ELSA day on 30 November. The purpose of the event was to bring together law students across Europe in a lively discussion of the key human rights issues. Mr Boček’s legal adviser participated in the webinar, together with the Secretary to the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons of the Parliamentary Assembly and the Deputy to the Director from the Office of the Human Rights Commissioner.

The Special Representative will attend a meeting of the PACE Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons in Paris on 7 December to discuss his report on camps in northern France and his fact-finding mission to Italy.

On 9 December the Special Representative will attend the conference “Challenges to more Sustainable and Inclusive Growth in Europe” in Paris hosted by the Council of Europe Development Bank to celebrate its 60th anniversary. Mr Boček will chair the session on “Migration: Risks & Opportunities”.
