Parliamentarians visit immigration centres in Austria

On 6 May 2019, a parliamentary delegation visited two migration centres – Traiskirchen and Zinnergasse in Austria. The visit was organised by the Committee in the framework of the Assembly's Parliamentary Campaign to End Immigration Detention of Children. The delegation was led by Pierre-Alain Fridez (Switzerland, SOC), General Rapporteur on the Campaign. The participants exchanged views with members of the Austrian Parliament and officials from the Federal Ministry of the Interior on the current situation of asylum seeking and migrant children and particularly unaccompanied minors. Another visit will take place on 14 June, to Cyprus.

The Committee’s next plenary meeting will take place in Zurich on 29-30 May at the invitation of the Chair, Doris Fiala (ALDE, Switzerland). Reports on violence against child migrants and pushback policies and action by member states will be adopted, and a visit to the JUCH Asylum Centre will give parliamentarians a new opportunity to gain first-hand experience of how migration is managed in the country, at a time when competencies are being decentralised to regional centres.
