Final conference of the Parliamentary Campaign to end detention of migrant children

On 26 June 2019, the PACE Campaign to End Immigration Detention of Children held its final conference, summing up its work since its launch by the Parliamentary Assembly in April 2015. Ms Doris Fiala (Switzerland, ALDE), Chairperson of the Committee on Migration, Mr Pierre-Alain Fridez (Switzerland, SOC), General Rapporteur on the Parliamentary Campaign, Ms Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Ms Anna Maria Corazza Bildt, then European Parliament Coordinator on Children's Rights and Ms Stella Kyriakides (Cyprus, EPP/CD), Member of the PACE Committee on Migration made the opening speeches.

“This campaign has been just timely and effective, facilitating studies and visits, producing parliamentary guides, reaching out to politicians, ombudsmen and children´s rights practitioners. It is by these means that you have shared the evidence, knowledge and best practice that lead to the increased use of alternatives to child detention”, said Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

An exchange of views was also held on the topic of ending violence against migrant children, with the participation of experts from the Council of Europe, OHCHR and Ms Rósa Björk Brynjólfsdóttir (Iceland, UEL), Rapporteur on the Report “Stop violence and exploitation of migrant children”. The related Resolution 2295 (2019) was adopted unanimously the next day by the Parliamentary Assembly.
