Access to registered same-sex partnerships: it’s a question of equality

Today, the Commissioner for Human Rights, Nils Muižnieks, publishes his human rights comment on “Access to registered same-sex partnerships: it’s a question of equality”

Noticing the growing trend in Europe and beyond towards granting same-sex couples legal recognition for their relationships, the Commissioner highlights that emotions often run high around this issue. He recalls however that the problems faced by “rainbow families” are real and that access to registered same-sex partnerships is not just symbolic, it is a necessity to end discrimination and to protect the rights of same-sex couples and their families. Nils Muižnieks stresses that “granting rights and benefits to same-sex couples does not take anything away from different-sex couples who already have access to them. (…) Our societies are made up of a rich diversity of individuals, relationships and families. It’s time we see this as an asset.”
