Back Secretary General meets French Minister for Europe Harlem Désir

The French Minister for European Affairs, Harlem Désir visited the Council of Europe on Tuesday. He congratulated M. Jagland on his reelection as Secretary General and conveyed the French Government’s full support for the work of the Council of Europe.

They discussed the situation in Ukraine and in particular the role of the Council of Europe in providing assistance towards constitutional, judicial and electoral reforms. Further topics of discussion included Russia, Turkey the Western Balkans and the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina in particular. Minister Désir welcomed the Secretary General’s proposal for a Council of Europe Summit to elaborate a new strategic concept and agenda for human rights in the coming years. The Secretary General thanked Minister Désir for the French Government’s substantial support to the Strasbourg World Forum for Democracy which they both agreed is an important event to highlight human rights and democratic participation, in particular of young people.
