Community involvement in prison and probation work

21st Conference of Directors of Prison and Probation Services

The 21st Council of Europe Conference of Directors of Prison and Probation Services (CDPPS) was hosted by the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice and the Dutch Custodial Institutions Agency. It aimed at bringing together high-ranking representatives of the prison and probation services of the member and observer States of the Organisation, as well as renowned experts and researchers and representatives of the justice sector and of the civil society.

The theme of this year’s Conference was Community Involvement in Prison and Probation Work. The role and place of families of offenders and the attention and care needed by their children will be among the topics discussed. Representatives of “Children of Prisoners Europe” (COPE) were among the key speakers.

Examples of co-operation between prison and probation services and the community as a way towards better social reintegration of prisoners and probationers was also discussed.

Prison overcrowding was again on the agenda of the Conference, as well as ways of dealing with radicalisation of prisoners.

On 16 June, in the morning, a visit to the judicial complex Zaanstad was organised by the Dutch Custodial Institutions Agency.
