Secretary General Jagland commends Italy for its efforts to stop prison overcrowding

The Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland met Italian Justice Minister Andrea Orlando in Rome on Wednesday and welcomed the recent efforts Italy has undertaken to reform its justice system, notably to resolve the problem of prison overcrowding. On Thursday, Mr Jagland met the Italian Secretary of State for Europe, Sandro Gozi who confirmed Italy's strong support for the EU's accession to the European Convention on Human Rights. Another topic of discussion with Mr Orlando and Mr Gozi was the Council of Europe's Social Charter and the significance of the anniversary event planned for October in Turin.
