Statement of the SRSG’s for Roma issues on the recent event in the Primary School of Aharnes in the town of Menidi (Greece)

It is with great sadness that I heard of the death of young Mario during a school festival at the 6th Primary School of Aharnes in the town of Menidi last week. My sincere condolences to the family.

The tragic circumstances which led to the death of Mario, is a grim reminder of the dangers involved in the use of illegal fire arms in urban settings. Far too often have we bared witness to the tragic repercussions of the use of fire arms during, what would seem to some residents, as a local tradition during celebrations.

I endorse any measures taken by the Greek authorities to prohibit illegal firearm possession and to increase penalties to those who break the law

I encourage the school community of Menidi to continue their efforts in achieving a harmonious diverse school environment and their quest for inclusive quality education for all children.
