Back Balance in Sport

The Council of Europe is working to make sporting equality between men and women a reality

On 5 and 6 December the Council of Europe held a conference in Strasbourg on the role of sport in promoting gender equality.  The conference was attended by Sarah Ourahmoune, the female boxing champion who won a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Rio.

This event marked the first year of a Council of Europe/European Commission project (“Mixité dans le Sport/Balance in Sport”) concerning leadership, technical supervision, participation in sports, gender-based violence and media coverage of women's sporting events.

The data and information on good practices gathered in four pilot countries – Spain, Finland, France and Romania – were presented at the meeting. Other countries and sports organisations are also expected to use the indicators developed by the Council of Europe to promote gender equality in sport and improve anti-discrimination efforts.
