The round table on the immunity of judges  and the procedure of its lifting under the new legislation of Ukraine took place in Kyiv on 14 September

On 14 September 2016 a round table on the immunity of judges and the procedure of its lifting under the new legislation of Ukraine took place in Kyiv. The event was organized by the Council of Europe project “Support to the implementation of the judicial reform in Ukraine”, and attended by the members and representatives of the High Council of Justice, Council of Judges of Ukraine, judges and representatives of the Supreme Court of Ukraine and high specialised courts, representatives of other Ukrainian authorities and civil society organisations.

The participants of the event discussed new provisions of the Ukrainian legislation concerning the legal institute of the immunity of judges, as well as procedural issues of lifting the immunity of judges by the High Council of Justice, including the necessity to reach the balance between the immunity of judges and their accountability before the society.

The international expert of the Council of Europe, Mr Ðuro Sessa, who is the judge of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Croatia and the Vice-President of the Consultative Council of European Judges, presented standards of the Council of Europe as regards the immunity of judges and the procedures of its lifting, together with the relevant practice of the member-states.

As a follow-up to the event the representatives and experts of the Council of Europe offered their support to the Ukrainian authorities in ensuring compliance of the legislative framework and the relevant regulations with the standards of the Council of Europe.

The Council of Europe project “Support to the implementation of the judicial reform in Ukraine” is funded by a contribution from the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and is a continuation of previous efforts of the Council of Europe as regards the reform of the judiciary. It aims at further approximation of the Ukrainian system of judiciary to the standards and recommendations of the Council of Europe.
