On 27 May the round table “On European Standards and the Quality of Justice” was held in Zaporizhya, Ukraine.

The event was organized jointly by the Council of Europe project “Support to the Implementation of the Judicial Reform in Ukraine”, Zaporizhya Regional Court of Appeal and Zaporizhya Regional Association of Judges. Its goal was to discuss key standards and recommendations of the Council of Europe as regards the independence of judges, quality of judgments, assessment of judges and their disciplinary liability, as well as the role of court presidents. Judges of Zaporizhya region, members of the Council of Judges of Ukraine, national and international experts participated in the discussion.

During the event, the Council of Europe Plan of Action on Strengthening Judicial Independence and Impartiality (adopted on 13th of April 2016 at the 1253rd meeting of the Committee of Ministers of Council of Europe in Sofia, Bulgaria) was presented to the participants.

The Council of Europe project “Support to the Implementation of the Judicial Reform in Ukraine” is funded by a contribution from the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and is a follow-up to previous efforts of the Council of Europe as regards the reform of judiciary. It aims at further approximation of Ukrainian system of judiciary to the standards and recommendations of the Council of Europe.
