Seminar on International Cooperation in Criminal Matters for Ukrainian prosecutors held in Kyiv

On 20-21 April 2017 a seminar “International cooperation in the criminal matters: topical issues of public prosecutor’s offices’ activities” was held in Kyiv. The event was organised by the Council of Europe Project “Continued Support to the Criminal Justice Reform in Ukraine”, funded by the Danish Government, jointly with the General Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine (GPO) and the National Academy of Prosecutors of Ukraine (NAPU).

The event was aimed at discussing the practical challenges in the relevant areas faced by the Ukrainian prosecutors, sharing the best European practices and indicating ways to enhance the activities related to the international cooperation in the criminal matters. The seminar covered the topics of the international standards of legal cooperation in the criminal proceedings, mutual legal assistance and simplified legal assistance procedure in the criminal proceedings, as well as extradition matters. It gathered about 40 participants representing GPO, NAPU and regional public prosecutors’ offices.

Welcome and opening remarks were made by Mr Yevhen Pikalov, Head of the Department for international legal cooperation, GPO, Mr Yurii Sevruk, Vice-Rector of NAPU, and Ms Ketevan Tskhomelidze, Project Manager of the Council of Europe Project “Continued support to the criminal justice reform in Ukraine”.

The Council of Europe consultants Ms Arvinder Sambei (United Kingdom) and Ms Kararzyna Krysiak (Poland) presented their countries’ practice in the international cooperation in legal matters. The representatives of the Ukrainian public prosecution service reflected on some practical challenges and improvement measures from their perspective. The participants discussed the steps needed to strengthen the effectiveness of the prosecutors’ activities in this realm. The importance of professional network building and necessity of coordination between all stakeholders involved was also highlighted.

Wrapping up the seminar, the representatives of the prosecution service underlined further line of action, while the Council of Europe reconfirmed readiness to provide continued support.
