Public discussion on Human Rights and Interculturality

On 24th October the municipality of Beja (Portugal) organized a session on “Human Rights and Interculturality” to celebrate the municipal day for equality. Issues such as equal opportunities for all in a perspective going beyond gender and encompassing citizenship and universal human rights were addressed.

In a context where the matter of refugees is the pivotal element of analysis and reflection by networks and media, it was interesting to discuss migrant integration and the historical and social perspective of this phenomenon from a legal stance.

Invited speakers were:

  • Sónia Calvário, Portuguese, lawyer and Beja municipality deputy mayor,
  • Quintino Biague, Guinean, doctor working at the ULSBA,
  • Marina Pukayevych, Ukrainian, operational assistant working at the ULSBA.

During the session, three refugees of Syrian nationality, settled in Beja since march 2016 thanks to the Red Cross, actively participated and shared their experiences of integration and challenges faced.
