Deputy Secretary General opens Sports’ Conference in Vienna

Deputy Secretary General Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni opened today the EPAS (Council of Europe’s Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport) annual conference in Vienna, together with Austrian Minister of Defence and Sport Hans Peter Doskozil.

The event focused on how sport can be used as a tool to enhance the integration of migrants.

At the end of the first session, Austria, Slovenia and Albania signed the Council of Europe Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions, known as Match-fixing Convention.

The purpose of this treaty is to prevent, detect, punish and discipline the manipulation of sports competitions, as well as strengthening the exchange of information and international co-operation among public authorities, sports organisations and betting operators.

During the morning, Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni addressed the participants of a high-level global conference in Vienna on “Towards Childhoods free from Corporal Punishment”. She highlighted progress in law reform and practice to ban corporal punishment in the home, in day and alternative care settings, in schools and in penal institutions, showing that full prohibition can be recognised and should be embraced in all Council of Europe member states.
