Deputy Secretary General in Lucca for protection of cultural property through criminal law

Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General Gabriella Battaini Dragoni will participate in an international seminar on “A New Perspective on the Protection of Cultural Property through Criminal Law”, which will take place on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th of February in Lucca, Italy (Complesso di San Francesco, piazza San Francesco, 19). The event is organised by the Lucca’s IMT School for Advanced Studies in co-operation with the Council of Europe, under the Patronage of the Italian Ministry of Justice and the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.

The Italian Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism Dario Franceschini and the Italian Minister of Justice Andrea Orlando will take part in the conference together with academics, high-level representatives of international organisations and national governments and world experts on international legal protection of cultural property.

Furthermore, the event will be the occasion to highlight challenges and opportunities for the new Council of Europe Convention, currently under negotiation during the Cypriot chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers in Strasbourg, on offences related to cultural property and illicit trafficking of cultural goods: the only international treaty focusing on criminal measures and sanctions on illegal activities in the field of cultural heritage.
