Country visit

The Commissioner for Human Rights starts today a contact visit to Romania to discuss with national authorities and non governmental organisations (NGOs) the overall human rights situation in the country.

During the two-day visit, the Commissioner will meet several ministers (among which the Minister of Foreign Affairs and of Justice), parliamentarians, the Speakers of the Chambers, the Presidents of the Supreme Court of Justice and of the Constitutional Court of Romania, the Presidential Advisor for International Relations, the Secretary of State for Interethnic Relations and the Ombudsman.

Thomas Hammarberg will also meet a number of NGOs and participate in a round table organised by Save the Children, about the work of ombudsmen for children. The Commissioner will be accompanied by one of his staff members, Mr Alp Ay.
