On 3 October 2016, and in the context of the Slovenian “Week of the Child” celebrations taking place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the Children’s Rights Division of the Council of Europe participated in a panel discussion on “Refugees and Migrant Children and the Engagement of their Rights during Integration in Local Environments”, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia and partners from Slovenian civil society.

The goal of the event, bringing together national and international actors, diplomats, academics and civil society representatives, was to share good practices of institutions and organisations assisting refugee and migrant children in claiming their rights.

The discussions addressed the challenges faced by migrant and refugee children when trying to integrate into and find their place in local communities. They focused on the international legal framework protecting the human rights of refugee and migrant children and its practical implementation, on children’s experiences and difficulties faced in local communities; as well as on what more could be done, at local, national and international level, in order to ensure that they can enjoy their fundamental rights.
