The Group of Specialists on the European Diploma for the Protected Areas held its annual meeting on 8 March 2017 in Strasbourg. The Group of Specialists monitors the implementation of Committee of Ministers’ conditions and recommendations attached to the diploma awarded areas. The members of the group discussed the opportunity to renew the diplomas of 6 areas, followed up on their conclusions and decisions of last year’s meeting, and determined whether areas require particular attention.

The European Diploma for Protected Areas is a prestigious international award granted since 1965 by the Council of Europe. It is awarded to protected areas, managed in an exemplary way, for their outstanding scientific, cultural or aesthetic qualities and their European importance for the preservation of biological, geological and landscape diversity.
