Opening of the Symposium

Addressing the meeting, Luxembourg's Minister of Justice, Luc Frieden, said that following the Council of Europe's spectacular expansion and the forthcoming enlargement of the European Union, they had to make sure that the Strasbourg and Luxembourg courts did not come into competition by producing divergent case-law. European Union accession to the European Convention on Human Rights would enable them to avoid such competition.
