Chair of the Committee of Ministers

The Foreign Affairs Ministers of the 45 Council of Europe member states hold the Chair of the Committee of Ministers for a term of 6 months in rotation. At the end of each Session of the Committee of Ministers, the Chairmanship falls to the next member state in the alphabetical order of the English country names. At the conclusion of the Session of the Committee of Ministers on 15 May 2003 in Strasbourg, Moldova assumed the Chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s executive body for the next six months.

In his address to the Assembly as Chairman-in-Office of the Committee of Ministers, Nicolae DUDAU, Foreign Affairs Minister of Moldova, emphasised two priorities on the Moldovan Chairmanship’s programme viz. alerting European public opinion to the issue of “frozen” conflicts, and drafting a general European convention on trafficking in human beings. Vladimir Voronin says Council of Europe experience will help Moldova to join EU

President Vladimir Voronin told the Parliamentary Assembly that the Council of Europe's active involvement in his country had helped it to settle a number of difficult problems and that the introduction of European standards has had a very positive effect on the country's political process. They had learnt a great deal, he told his audience, and this valuable experience would contribute to another ambitious goal, that of joining the European Union. A third Council of Europe summit was necessary, he added, to enable heads of state and government to review the major challenges facing Europe in the third millennium.

Priorities of the Moldovan Chairmanship of the Council of Europe

Nicolae Dudau, Foreign Affairs Minister of Moldova, set out the priorities for the Moldovan Chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers for the next six months. Reinforcing the unification of Europe in the political and legal domains and emphasising social and cultural diversity will be our two main objectives the Minister said. The Moldovan Chairmanship will end at the conclusion of the next session of the Committee of Ministers, which will take place on 5 and 6 November in Chisinau. (more ...)

Conference on “Frozen Conflicts in Europe” - Chisinau 11 and 12 September 2002

As part of the Moldovan Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers, a conference on “Frozen Conflicts in Europe” took place in Chisinau on 11 and 12 September. It aimed to examine various aspects of several such conflicts - including those regarding Cyprus, Nagorno-Karabakh and Abkhazia, but with a special emphasis on the Transnistria region in Moldova itself.

Moldova wants to set an example says President Voronin

Addressing the Parliamentary Assembly Standing Committee in Chisinau on 27 May, Vladimir Voronin, the President of Moldova - which is currently chairing the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers -, gave assurances on the respect of country’s membership obligations and said that the country intends to contribute to the respect of democratic values and Council of Europe norms in all members states, by setting an example of fulfilling its own commitments to the organization.
