''EU membership does not mean less commitment to the Council of Europe''

Video record of the speech

[28 JAN 2003] Addressing the Assembly today, Malta's Prime Minister said that his country's membership of the EU would not imply any 'abdication from the tasks willingly entered into many years previously by way of membership of the Council'.

There were areas such as human rights where the Union could not replace the Council. Edward Fenech-Adami, whose country is currently chairing the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers, also said that cross-cultural dialogue was one of the most urgent needs in international relations and ''central to warding off war and terrorism''.
