Luxembourg: Council of Europe leaders meet with President of the European Convention

Strasbourg, 15.10.2002 - The contribution of the Council of Europe to key questions concerning the future of the European Union is at the centre of a meeting to be held between the Council's Secretary General Walter Schwimmer and the President of the European Convention, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing on Wednesday 16 October in Luxembourg. Lydie Polfer, Luxembourg Minister for Foreign Affairs and Chairman-in-Office of the Organisation's Committee of Ministers, will host and participate in this tri-partite encounter at her Ministry.

The purpose of this meeting in Luxembourg is to exchange views on major challenges for the Greater Europe, such as the development of pan-European responses to terrorism, organised crime and human trafficking; the effective protection of human rights in Europe, in particular by the accession of the EU to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR); the role of the Council of Europe as a forum for EU foreign policy towards its immediate neighbours;·and - more generally - the building of the future European Union on the solid foundations of the Council of Europe's already-existing instruments and institutions.
