The dutch village
In order to celebrate the Netherlands appropriately, as guest of honour of our city, our magnificent jewel, the castle square at the foot of the cathedral, will transform itself into a Dutch village on the 29th of November.
Lined up around the ice rink in the colours of the House of Orange, the Royal Family of the Netherlands, typically Dutch houses invite you to discover the talent of the craftsmen and to try out the delicious culinary specialities. Amongst the most celebrated traditional products are: Delft pottery, gold work from Amsterdam, cheesemakers from Limbourg and florists from Brabant. What about a Dutch beer after a round on ice skates or plate of smoked fish, a cheese platter or a bowl of pea soup "erwtensoep", just as Dutch tradition would demand?
From 29 November 2003
"Tour of the eleven towns of Friesland"
In the castle square ice skaters take over the ice rink. On a huge screen pictures of the "Tour of the eleven towns of Friesland" (Elfstedentocht) will be shown, a tour which thousands of Dutch people skate as soon as the ice is frozen.
