Terry Davis, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, made an official visit to the Russian Federation on 13-15 February to discuss the preparations of the Summit of Council of Europe Heads of State and Government and a wide range of other issues, including the priorities of the future Russian Chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers in 2006, priorities for cooperation between the Council of Europe and Russia, the fight against terrorism and organised crime, the functioning of the European Court of Human Rights, a programme of activities in Chechnya and political questions of common interest.

The Secretary General met Assistant to the Russian President Sergei Yastrzhembsky, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Justice Minister Yuri Chaika, Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliev and Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Vladimir Lukin.

He will also meet the Chairman of the Federation Council (upper Chamber of the Russian Parliament) Sergei Mironov and the Chairman of the Federation Council’s International Affairs Committee Mikhail Margelov, the Chairman of the State Duma (lower Chamber) Boris Gryzlov and the Chairman of the Duma’s International Affairs Committee Konstantin Kosachev, as well as members of the Russian delegation to the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly.
