Parliamentary Assembly session : 26 – 30 April 2004

''The 3rd Summit will be an opportunity to reaffirm the Council of Europe’s role''

28.04.2004 - Speaking before the Parliamentary Assembly, Committee of Ministers Chairman and Netherlands Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Bernard Bot took stock of progress on the implementation of the Netherlands Chairmanship’s priorities – human rights and monitoring mechanisms, integration and social cohesion. He also gave examples of the progress being made in the newest member states.

“A discussion on the Council of Europe’s role in the European institutional landscape warrants a third Summit”, he declared, on the eve of EU enlargement. “A third Summit that holds the promise of broader co-operation and stronger ties between European nations”, he continued, explaining that the Summit should address multilateral co-operation prospects in Europe and involve the OSCE, the United Nations and their specialised agencies.
