Council of Europe: Assembly's decision on Yugoslav membership welcomed

Strasbourg, 24.09.2002 - Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly President Peter Schieder and Secretary General Walter Schwimmer today welcomed the Assembly's vote in favour of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia's accession to the Council of Europe.

"This is a landmark decision in the process of Council of Europe enlargement. I sincerely hope that there will be an early agreement on the Constitutional Charter on relations between Serbia and Montenegro, which should allow us to invite the country into the Council of Europe family as its 45th member," said Mr Schieder.

"This decision brings ever-closer the day when the Council of Europe truly spans the whole continent, bringing our vision of a future enshrined in human rights, democracy, tolerance and peace to all the people of Europe," concluded Mr Schwimmer.
