Strasbourg, 22.04.2002 - ''Armed conflicts and related violations of humanitarian law remain the major cause for the existence of refugees and displaced persons, which amount to about five millions worldwide'', the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated in his adress to the Parliamentary Assembly. The special protection of women in armed conflicts is one of the ICRC high priority, he added. He welcomed the Assembly’s proposal to set up a European Observatory on trafficking of women and said that specific reference to the situation of women in armed conflicts should be made in all such projects.
